Als ondernemer en ook privé heb ik net als iedereen gebruik gemaakt van platforms zoals Facebook, Instagram en Twitter. Want je denkt dat dit nodig is om bekendheid voor je activiteiten te genereren. De social media kwamen terugkerend met vreemde foutmeldingen. Uiteindelijk heb ik besloten geen gebruik meer te maken die platforms die dat gedrag vertonen. Namelijk Twitter en alles van Facebook.

VREEMD GEDRAG SOCIAL MEDIA

Net zoals iedereen wilde ik social media gaan gebruiken om voor mijn activiteiten bekendheid te genereren. Ik had twee Facebook pagina's en een Twitter account voor mijn bedrijf en voor mijn fotografie een Instagram pagina. Het begon met Instagram. Ongeveer een jaar geleden was ik er mee begonnen door een account onder mijn echte naam aan te maken. In tijdsbestek van een paar weken waren er enkele tientallen natuur- en straat foto's door mij gepost. Hier en daar kwamen er nieuwe volgers bij en ik begon zelf mensen te volgen. Op een dag viel mij op dat mensen die ik was gaan volgen uit mijn volglijst waren verdwenen. Na ze opnieuw proberen te volgen kwam de app met de eerste melding. Mijn zakelijke account was omgezet naar privé én mijn mogelijkheden op Instagram werden 'uit veiligheidsredenen' beperkt. 

Het vreemde was dat er wél nieuwe volgers bij kwamen. Posten lukte ook nog. Maar bij elke like kreeg ik opnieuw dezelfde foutmelding. Instagram liet duidelijk merken dat het mij als een onbetrouwbare gebruiker zag en probeerde mij sancties op te leggen. 

Enige tijd later probeerde ik tevergeefs op mijn zakelijke Facebook pagina in te loggen. De pagina schoot in een soort 'loop'. De zakelijke pagina bleef leesbaar voor publiek maar ik kon er niet meer bij. Met welk apparaat en welke browser ik probeerde in te loggen, altijd hetzelfde resultaat. 

Weer iets later probeerde ik een foto voor mijn bedrijf op Twitter te plaatsen. Direct nadat ik de 'Verzend' knop indrukte kreeg ik de melding 'ACCOUNT SUSPENDED'. Wegen 'wangedrag' zou Twitter mijn account met onmiddellijke ingang hebben verwijderd.

Wat is hier aan de hand?

Als tweeënvijftigjarige ben ik niet de social media skills machtig zoals de gemiddelde tieners. Daarom ik heb er een paar geraadpleegd. Helemaal niet verbaasd vertelden sommigen. Zet je locatiegegevens een tijdje aan en je VPN een tijdje uit (zodat de social media kunnen zien waar je bent) en dan komt het vanzelf weer goed. Dat heb ik een tijdje gedaan en warempel. Op Twitter na, want die account was meteen verwijderd, verdwenen de foutmeldingen op zowel Facebook als Instagram als sneeuw voor de zon. 

Straf

Het is nu met zekerheid vast te stellen. De social media dwingen gebruikers zonder het letterlijk te zeggen af géén gebruik te maken van een veilige VPN verbinding en verplichten jou altijd de locatiegegevens aan te laten staan. Doe je dat niet, dan wordt je gestraft. 

Principes

Dan moet je mij hebben, ik laat mij niet dicteren door social media om mijn telefooninstellingen aan te passen. Dus ik heb de instellingen weer terug gezet zoals ik dat graag wil en inderdaad kwamen de foutmeldingen weer terug. 

DE DRUPPEL

SOCIAAL (MEDIA) GEÏSOLEERD

Stel dat ik een miljoen volgers zou hebben op Instagram en ik er financieel afhankelijk van zou zijn? Dan zou ik geen keus hebben om mij al die zaken af te laten dwingen. Dan ben je mooi in de aap gelogeerd!

Pas als je deze media de rug toegekeerd hebt, dan merk je hoe veel tijd je er dagelijks aan hebt besteed. Het voelt een beetje als wanneer je nét gestopt bent met roken. Het gevoel bekruipt je telkens dat je het moet checken. Gemiddeld heb ik zo'n 120 minuten per dag aan die social media besteed. Nog niet eens meegerekend, het lezen van al die onnodige Whatsapp berichten. Al die teruggewonnen tijd besteed ik nu aan dingen zoals het schrijven van deze blog, aan het zoeken naar alternatieven hoe ik mijn foto's aan een breed publiek kan laten zien en diverse andere dingen die mij interesseren. 

Momenteel komen mijn inkomsten 100% uit mijn bedrijfje waarbij ik cursussen met online lesmateriaal verzorg. En ondertussen probeer ik online mijn foto's zichtbaar te maken voor publiek. Zonder Facebook en Instagram voelt het dan wel alsof je een arm mist. Maar het lucht ook op. Er is geen groepsdruk meer van Facebook en Whatsapp en ik voel mij niet meer onder druk gezet door die rare meldingen van Instagram. 

ALTERNATIEVEN

Één van de manieren is om zo goed mogelijk vindbaar te zijn via zoekmachines zoals 'Google' en 'DuckDuckGo'. DuckDuckGo is enorm in opkomst omdat het geheel privacy vriendelijk is. 

Ik heb een website met foto's gemaakt op de website 'Smugmug.com'. Met Smugmug maak je eenvoudig een professioneel ogende fotografie website. De site heb ik vervolgens gekoppeld aan mijn domeinnaam onnorijpstra.com. Smugmug heeft een grote achterban en mensen kunnen er rechtstreeks afdrukken op bestellen (mijn totale verkoop saldo staat trouwens op 'nul' Euro haha). Rijk ga ik er niet van worden. 

Flickr is meer een fotografie social media website waar mensen ook op kunnen volgen en liken. Het nadeel alleen is dat het vrij eenvoudig is om de foto's er in hoge kwaliteit van af te halen. En dat weerhoudt mij er van om daar mijn beste werk op te tonen. Ik plaats er nu vooral foto's op als ik die met mensen moet delen die er zelf op staan. Zodat ze die in hoge kwaliteit kunnen downloaden.

As an entrepreneur and creative person i have used platforms like Facebook, Instagram and Twitter because i thought i needed them to generate exposure for my activities. These social media repeatedly showed weird errors and forced me in a direction i don't want. Finally i decided not to use those social media platforms anymore. So i quit using Twitter, Facebook, Instagram and Whatsapp.

WEIRD BEHAVIOR

I had two Facebook pages and one Twitter account for my professional activities and for my photography i created an Instagram account. It all started with Instagram. About a year ago i created the Instagram account, using my real name. In a matter of weeks i posted a bunch of nature and street images. Here and there i liked posts of others and i started to follow colleague photographers. One day i noticed that most of the people I was following, i was not following anymore. Instagram removed them from the list i follow. Also, my business account was automatically changed in to a private account. If i tried to like or follow anyone, i got the error message that my possibilities on Insta where restricted out of 'safety measurements'. So Insta was actually telling me that i was an untrusted person for them. And they punished me for that. 

A while later i was not able anymore to log in to my business Facebook page. The page got in to a sort of loop after logging in. It was still available on the web, only i could not access it anymore. No matter which device or web browser i used. 

Again a while later, i was uploading an image as a Twitter post. The moment i pressed the 'Post' button, i got the error message 'ACCOUNT SUSPENDED'. Because of 'misbehavior' my Twitter account was removed instantly.

What is going on?

As a fifty-two year old man i a not a social media expert like the average teenager. So i spoke a few about this issue. Totally not surprised they told me, switch on your 'Location Services' and switch off your VPN connection for a while and see what happens. And yes, the errors disappeared like snow under the sun. Except Twitter off-course because that account was completely removed by Twitter. 

Punishment 

I now know for sure that the social media are forcing me to not use a safe VPN connection and not turn of location services. In other words if they can not see where i am, they will punish me. 

Principles

Then my character kicks in. I will not let social media companies enforce me how i like to set-up my phone, so i set VPN back on again and switch off location services by default.  

Better known is that if you want to use Whatsapp, that you are obliged to give the app access to all contacts information on your phone. Something that is not necessary at all. 

THE LIMIT

As we all do i guess i was wasting time nosing around reacting on posts of people i hardly know or don't know at all. I red an article that Facebook had removed an image in a political article because they found it inappropriate. Then something snapt in me and i decided that i should not give those platforms so much time and information about my life. I decided not to start a new Twitter account, remove my Facebook, Instagram and Whatsapp account. 

SOCIAL (MEDIA) ISOLATED

Imagine i would have a million followers on Instagram and i was financially dependent on them? I would have no choice than letting them enforcing me how i set-up my phone and how i deal with my privacy. That would be something. 

As soon as you have turned your back to these platforms and not use them anymore, then you realize how much time you have spend with them. It feels a bit like when you have just quit smoking. Every moment you have a second rest, you get the feeling you have to check something. I spend an average of two hours a day on these social media platforms. Not even counted watching al the bullshit memes and messages fired at you in the Whatsapp groups. Al that recovered time is now available for me to spend time on things like writing this blog, searching for alternatives to share my work to a wide audience. And simply create things. 

At this moment 100% of my income comes from my business where i offer training and online lessons to fashion designers and fashion design teachers. Meanwhile i try to find ways to find an audience for my photography. Without Facebook and Instagram that feels a bit like missing an arm. But it also feels as a relief. No group pressure anymore from Facebook and Whatsapp and no more weird punishment errors from Instagram and Twitter. 

ALTERNATIVES

I use Béhance and LinkedIn for my professional activities. And i created enough fame / exposure like this. Now i need to find a way to become visible as a photographer to a wide audience. What are the alternatives for me? 

One of the ways is to be as good as possible visible on search engines. Not only Google is important but DuckDuckGo is gaining a substantial part of the search market because it is very privacy friendly.

I created a photography website using smugmug.com. This website offers a simple method to create a professional looking photography website. I attached this website to my domain name onnorijpstra.com. Smugmug has a large network of photographers and visitors can buy prints. I sold zero images yet, but that's ok.

Flickr is a kind of photography social media website where people can follow and like. The down side of this platform is that it is relatively simple to download high res images. And that keeps me a bit away from showing my best work on this website. Now i mainly use it to upload images i need to share with people that a featuring the images.

I think Pinterest is the best alternative for Instagram as a Photographer. The pro against 'Flickr' is that Pinterest shows images in a relatively low quality, but still nice to view. This makes it impossible to steal the images for professional high res solutions. While Flickr is a website where your images only look nice if you upload them in full quality. That's why i will take some extra time in Pinterest the upcoming time. 

What is most important for me is to have a few ways on the internet to make my images visible to the public. I am not living in the dream that it will generate a great deal of money. For my business i consult and teach a few Adobe applications. That's why it is good for me to have experience in being a Adobe Stock contributor. Adobe Stock is a website where people can by stock photo's for royalty free use. When an image or illustration is downloaded, you will gain a tiny percentage as fee. The amount of images offered on such a stock website is so huge that you should expect much earnings of it. But it is still fun to offer some of my work on it. The amount of downloads until now is still zero :-).

Béhance is a free portfolio website offered by Adobe. Using a free Adobe ID you can put your creative work on this website. People can view, follow, react and like your work. I posted a few illustrations i created using Adobe Fresco on the iPad. Adobe saw the illustration and labeled it as a Fresco expert Illustration. After that, my portfolio got many extra views, followers and likes. In my opinion, Béhance is more drawing, and illustration based than photography. That's why i keep Béhance for showing my professional fashion illustration and design work and not my photography work. Unless it would be fashion. 

Signal offers exactly the same user experience as Whatsapp. You use it the same way. Behind the scenes it works significantly different. There is no server in between the messages. The messages are send directly from one phone to another (peer to peer). Using high end encryption nobody can read the messages. Also, the app does not ask for all your contacts. In other words, Signal is a fair and privacy friendly messaging app. OK, having no Whatsapp means you do not belong to all those groups anymore. But think this, do you really want to see a bunch of stupid meme's and messages all day long for the rest of your life. Think again. By the way, with Signal it is possible to create the same kind of groups. Only, i am happy to be liberated from them. 

 

ADOBE LIGHTROOM CLASSIC

Lightroom Classic is used by photographers for archive and pre-production. The pro of this application is that you can download plug-ins to upload photos directly in to some websites like Flickr and SmugMug. Not even that, you can update if you edited images in Lightroom Classic on a later stage. Websites and social media that offer a plug-in for Lightroom Classic are a great time saver for the photographer. 

NOW I GET TO WORK

Using Smugmug i have finished creating my photography website. I keep using Flickr as a communication tool to share large size images to people featuring them. If i ever will put my best work on there i don't know yet. And Pinterest will have my main attention for photography for now, it's an empty account just yet. But that will change  soon.

Ongeveer tot mijn 23ste jaar heb ik analoog gefotografeerd en ontwikkelde ik zelf mijn foto's. Bijna alles zwart wit. Aan het einde van mijn analoge fotografie periode heb ik zelf kleur afgedrukt. Dat was behoorlijk veel werk per foto. Ik was gerust zeven uur bezig met het maken van kleurproeven voordat ik één goede foto had. In 1994 studeerde ik op de mode academie af als mode-ontwerper. Ik deed uiteraard de fotografie van mijn eigen eindexamen collectie. Dat zijn zo'n beetje de laatste analoge kleurenfoto's geweest die ik heb gemaakt. 

De bovenstaande foto is kleding uit mijn eindexamen collectie. De foto heb ik gemaakt op Trafalgar Square in Londen en is een van de laatste foto's die ik op film heb geschoten en zelf heb ontwikkeld. 

Einde oefening

Manfred Langer, eigenaar van de destijds beroemde 'Club IT' had mij gevraagd om foto's te maken tijdens een feest die gekoppeld was aan de filmpremière van de film 'Pricilla Queen of the Dessert'. Eerst gingen wij in Tuschinski naar de premiere en daarna zouden wij naar het feest in de IT gaan. Ik zou bij de premiere als gast mee gaan over de rode loper. Daarom had ik mijn fotoapparatuur in de kofferbak van de auto laten liggen. Niet zo slim want na de premiere was de auto leeggeroofd. Nog maar nét afgestudeerd was ik alle apparatuur die ik bezat kwijtgeraakt.

In dezelfde periode zag ik een vriend en fotograaf 'Maurice Scheltens' een foto bewerken met een van de eerste Photoshop versies. Ik wist wel dat Inez van Lamsweerde al bezig was met de 'Paintbox' (de allereerste fotobewerking software/machine.) Daar is zij toen ook bekend mee geworden. Maar toen ik bij Maurice in zijn studio zag hoe gemakkelijk het was om kleuren van een foto aan te passen was ik geschokt. Ik deed daar in de doka zeven uur over! 

Ik had een handschrift ontwikkeld door gebruik te maken van de beperkingen van film en dia. Ik fotografeerde veel met diafilm en liet het als negatief ontwikkelen. Dit proces werd "dia C41" genoemd. Omdat je de fout (dia als film ontwikkelen) opzettelijk creëerde, diende je bij het afdrukken op kleur te corrigeren. Wat felle kleuren met een hoog contrast oplevert en uitgebeten wit partijen. 

Deze foto heb ik genomen in Parijs in 1994 tijdens de modeshow 'Always on Camera' van Vivienne Westwood waar ik op dat moment voor werkte. Een typische "dia C41" foto. 

Maar het digitale fotografie tijdperk deed zijn intrede. Digitaal was het effect wat ik bereikte met mijn handschrift met een druk op de knop te realiseren. 

De combinatie van het feit dat ik al mijn fotoapparatuur kwijt was en dat het digitale tijdperk mijn handschrift om zeep had geholpen heeft er toe geleid dat ik destijds ben gestopt met fotograferen. De eerste digitale camera's waren nog van te lage kwaliteit en ik had geen zin meer om met film te gaan werken. De gedachte was, ik wacht wel tot de digitale camera van voldoende kwaliteit is geworden. 

Een nieuwe start

In de periode 1994 en nu 2020 heb ik diverse digitale camera's gehad en heb ik voornamelijk sport gefotografeerd, honkbal, voetbal, skateboarden, snowboarden en breakdance. Maar zonder serieuze ambities. 

Mijn eerste digitale camera was de Sony DSC-F505.

Na de sony kwam er een Canon EOS waarna ik alleen nog maar met Nikon heb gefotografeerd. Mijn eerste Nikon was de D90. Daarna volgde de D5200 en de D7000. 

2020 is voor mij het jaar van een nieuwe start met fotografie

Al heb ik vanaf de start digitale camera's gehad. Echt veel had ik mij er niet in verdiept. Pas de afgelopen twee jaar ben ik mij gaan inlezen in de materie. Met name over de verschillen in chip groottes en de consequenties daar van. Begin dit jaar kon ik goed alle type camera's plaatsen en was het voor mij duidelijk dat de Nikon Z6 mijn camera ging worden. Ook al waren de recensies in de eerste instantie niet al te best. De camera heeft een aantal firmware updates gehad en werd daarbij naar mijn mening de beste camera op de markt voor dat moment. In januari 2020 heb ik mijn eerste mirrorless full-frame camera Nikon Z6 aangeschaft.

Photography as a leitmotiv through my life

My first camera 

1980, at the attic of my parental house, my older brother build a photography dark room. When he left to live on his own, he left the dark room for me to use. That way i got in to photography at eleven years old. Owning a dark room made me wanting to have a camera as well. I went on my own to 'Foto Hofma' in Apeldoorn and bought a 'Praktica LTL mirror camera. The lady behind the counter said to her boss "you can't do that". I did not understand what she ment. At home my brother discovered that they sold me a camera with a blocked shutter. I paid fifty Dutch guilders for the camera. My brother and i went back to the shop and they got me trade the LTL for an older Practica L model. 

Looking at light

The Praktica L did not have a build in light meter. My brother thought me that in daylight i could work with a 1/125th shutter speed and 5.6 aperture. From that starting point i started to look at light. A bit darker ment one stop slower shutter speed or one stop larger lens opening. Buying a first camera lacking a light meter turned out a good thing afterwards. This is how i learned to look at light.

Writing this article i discovered that the first photography television course i studied in 1980 is now available on youtube. Hilarious to watch now, but for an eleven your old's first photography course it was the best learning experience. I can still see every page of the lesson book in my mind. I found the cover on Google images :-).

To save money i bought film per meter and i wrapped them myself in film rolls of 35 images per roll. Then i developed them my self. I could spend hours and hours in de dark room. Like 'normal' boys would stare at a model train shop window, i could stare for ages at the 'Ilford wall' in the photo store 'Dubach' in Apeldoorn. Those people must have thought 'what the heck is this young fellow doing at all that expensive stuff'. 

The first half automatic camera

My second camera became the Canon AE1. The first camera capable of setting the aperture automatically, based on the shutter speed you could set manually. There was no auto-focus yet. Then i bought the Canon A1. That was the first mirror camera that could set the shutter speed and aperture both fully automatically. Both the Canon AE1 and the A1 where the first camera with a microprocessor build in. 

Photographing people

The first years my photography subjects where: Baseball, portraits, skateboarding, snowboarding and fashion. Mostly people.

Last analog work

Until about my 23st i have taken analog pictures and developed the photo's my self. Most of them black and white. At the end of this period i have printed some color photo's. That was quite a lot of work.  Sometimes printing a photo in the desired color configuration took me seven hours. In 1994 i graduated as a fashion designer at the school of fine arts. Off-course i did my own fashion photography. As i did for my graduation collection. That was about my last analog photography.

The photo above shows clothes i designed for my graduation collection at the School of Fine Arts in 1994. The photo was taken at the 'Trafalgar Square' in London and is one of the last photo's i have taken analog and developed myself. 

The End

Manfred Langer, owner of a famous (gay / drag queen) dance club called 'Club IT' in Amsterdam asked me to take photo's at his party after the film premiére of the movie 'Pricilla Queen of the Dessert'. First we where guests at he premiére at 'Tuschinski' film theatre in Amsterdam after which we should go to the party at 'The IT'. Because we where going to enter the theatre over the red carpet as guests, i left my camera gear in the trunk of the car. Which was not very clever because when i came back from the premiére to collect my camera gear, the car was robbed. Just graduated i had no camera gear left. 

In the same period i witnessed a friend and photographer 'Maurice Scheltens' editing a photo on one of the first Photoshop versions. I knew that Inez van Lamsweerde was already making career editing photo's on the very first photo editing computer called the 'Paint Box'. When i saw Maurice changing the colors of a photo simply by dragging one slider on the computer, i was shocked. That few seconds he needed to edit the colors, took me seven hours in the dark room!

In the analog years i developed my own handwriting making use of the limitations of negative film and positive film. I took the photo's using positive film and developed them as negative film. This was a popular method called 'positive film C41'. Because i used the wrong kind of film, developed as negative, i had to correct the deliberately mistaken developed film resulting in very bright, high contrast colors with bright whites.

The digital age made it's entrance. The handwriting i developed over the years was possible to create in Photoshop in just two seconds. 

The combination of the fact that i lost all my photography gear and the beginning of the digital era totally ruined my motivation which led to the fact i quit photography.

The first digital camera's where too low quality yet to fully replace analog photography. My thoughts where, i 'll wait until the digital camera is of enough quality standard it can replace the quality of analog photography. 

A new start

Between 1994 and now 2020 i owned several digital camera's. I continued taking photo's only i did not take photography very serious. I took photo's of sports like Baseball, soccer, skateboarding, snowboarding and breakdance. 

My first digital camera was the Sony DSC-F505.

2020 is the year of a new start for my photography

Although i owned several digital camera's. I hadn't really looking in to it. Only the past two years i have been reading a lot about the new developments in sensor chips and the differences of sensor types. At the beginning of this year i really started to understand the differences and all ins and outs about the new age of full frame mirrorless digital photography. I knew that the Nikon Z6 would become my first new digital camera in years. Although the reviews where not to good at the beginning of the launch of the Z6. After two firmware updates, all downsides where fixed and in my opinion at that time, the Z6 was the best mirrorless camera on the market. That's why i bought the Z6 in January this year.
